"Foundations rely on strong, healthy grantee organizations to achieve progress in solving the world’s most pressing problems. Yet many U.S. and international nonprofits routinely face organizational challenges, from major staff transitions to capacity gaps. To address this, the Hewlett Foundation has long provided targeted support — what we call “organizational effectiveness grants” — to existing grantees to help strengthen their internal systems and management, enabling them to do their work better and enhance their impact.
To help us better understand how we can improve our own giving to strengthen our grantees’ organizational effectiveness, we wanted to learn from peers in the field who are investing in nonprofit capacity to support organizational health, sustainability, and resilience. This report summarizes the results of that field scan, which was conducted by Patricia Scheid, a former program officer with the foundation’s Gender Equity and Governance program, and Kris Helé, an independent consultant".
